Why does photography style matter?
Weddings mean different things to different people, so naturally there are different styles of wedding photography for different tastes.
The style of photography you choose should reflect how you see memories and moments and how you want to experience your wedding. A more traditional or editorial style of photography requires more of your time on the day and results in photos that are perfectly posed, bright and clean. A documentary style allows you to enjoy and experience your day fully, with photos that are more immersive, emotional, and story driven.
As a couple planning your wedding, you have a unique relationship with each of your vendors. Your photographer is the one who will be by your side for the whole day, and the one who will be responsible for keeping your wedding memories alive beyond the day itself. That means your photographer needs to be the one with whom you have the most open, honest, and transparent relationship. Choosing the right style for you is the key to enjoying and remembering the day the way you want to.
WHAT IS DOCUMENTARY STYLE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?
Documentary style wedding photography is an approach that is rooted in story and people. It's an observational approach rather than a directed or structured one. If you want to tell your story in an authentic and beautiful way, documentary style photography can do that for you.
A documentary photographer will have a relaxed shooting style, and an emphasis on natural candid photos which are not posed, staged or feel forced. That's not to say you won't get your group photos or your couple portraits, you definitely will but there is a time and place for it and it shouldn't be your entire day. A good documentary photographer will allow you to be yourself on your wedding, not thinking about the next pose or what looks 'aesthetic' or 'trendy'. It's all about being present in the moment, with the people you love around you.
HOW DO I PHOTOGRAPH YOUR DAY?
My calm approach when documenting your wedding would mean naturally couples and guests feel more relaxed when being photographed. As a documentary style wedding photographer, I will be present throughout the day for as long as you need, anticipating the moments as they happen.
A lot of what I do is rooted in earning access and building enough trust so that people can fully be themselves around me. Not interrupting moments, not forcing them, just giving them the value they deserve. For me, weddings have never been about performing for the camera or curating the perfect image. They're about people, energy, family, movement and emotion. The things that make the day feel real.
On your wedding day, I will start from your home as this is where the wedding fun really begins. I will gently guide you on where you should be, for example where the lighting is the best. Beyond that, I leave it to you and your loved ones to dictate the pace of the day and what you want to do next. I'm not there to direct your wedding, it's your day after all, it should feel true to you.
